It was very hard to keep up with because I couldn’t read anything on NND at the time, so I had to wait for people to upload videos on YouTube… and they just didn’t get uploaded as frequently as they do now. The majority of my experience with Vocaloid came through YouTube at first. 恋は戦争 (Koi wa Sensou/Love is War) by supercell – Time skip to 2009. This song is commonly remembered as one of the first to personify Miku. ハジメテノオト (Hajimete no Oto/The First Sound) by malo – I’m still fond of the 3D PV for this one. This was also the video responsible for making leeks Miku’s official character item. Its popular 3D PV stood the test of time, giving personality to Miku in a time before MMD became popular.
みくみくにしてあげる♪ (Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru) by ikuP – It’s impossible for this to have been one of the first songs I ever heard, but it’s one of the ones that always sticks out in my mind when I try to think back that far. There’s also a good chance that this was the first song with Vocaloid I ever heard. Both were probably produced by azumakkusuP.

This version is a full version from 2008, while I’m certain that the one I remember was a short version from 2007 of significantly lower quality. プラチナ (Platina/Platinum) cover by azumakkusuP – Not the exact version I remember, but close enough. Why 11? Because I like to go that one extra step. Now, follow me below the cut for a list of the 11 songs that made my top most memorable. Vocaloid was still so new, but I had a feeling that it could be something very big, and I wanted to see it grow. I was drawn in by her design and was fooled by her voice and felt fascinated that what I was hearing wasn’t human.
It’s hard to say which video was the oldest I had ever seen at this point, but I distinctly remember how much I wanted to see Miku move. It was more common to see hand drawn PVs and 3D videos made from scratch in programs like Blender. Take my hand now and imagine that you’re back in 2007, experiencing Vocaloid for the very first time. That’s why I’m going to share some songs from long ago that still stand out in my memory. It would probably be impossible for me to list the top songs from every year until now, let alone find the room for them in one post without greatly stretching the page. (At least, if you want to sound like you know what you’re talking about, it really helps.) There isn’t anything wrong about that, but I believe that if you’re going to be a Vocaloid fan, you should be a Vocaloid fan with a diverse diet of music from today and yester-yester-yesterday.
For instance, even if you know of Matryoshka, you might not know Francium. Thing is, there are likely a lot of fans out there now who wouldn’t be familiar with the songs that I’m familiar with. I feel pretty fortunate to have been riding the wave from the moment it first began to swell back in 2007. It occurred to me recently that, while the people who are reading this are likely already Vocaloid fans, there are probably a lot of fans out there who weren’t into Vocaloid when it started gaining traction.
